[Read: John 21-Acts 1]
Jesus and Peter have just shared an intimate conversation, while walking together on the beach. Peter has just been restored to a right relationship with Jesus--all has been forgiven--all was right between them. Jesus even shared some very personal things that would be happening in Peter's future. Peter never felt closer to Jesus in his life than at this moment. Jesus concludes the conversation with these words, "FOLLOW ME!'
No more than a few seconds later, Peter turns around (as he realizes that John is following them) and says, "what about him?" Already Peter is becoming DISTRACTED. Jesus sternly replies, "what's it to you?"
Distractions cause you to lose traction! You begin to "slip-and-slide" down a slippery slope into sin!!! Peter is close to being tripped-up by jealousy, comparing himself to another, or wanting to compete for position. Jesus is trying to warn him that "it's none of his business!" Once again He reminds (sternly warns) Peter to "FOLLOW ME!" [See: John 19-22]
When we take our eyes off of Jesus, we lose our way!
We will veer off course!
We will miss all that He has for us.
We won't be able to complete the work He has for us to do.
If a runner "looks back" in a race (to see where the other runners are), he can step out of his lane and lose the race, or he can slow down his pace. He could even trip. If you want to go on with Jesus, run the race He has set for you.
GO FORWARD WITH FAITH....and FINISH YOUR RACE!!!
